National Intern Day is a day to celebrate and recognize the important role interns play in shaping our future. To highlight the experience and insights of our talented interns at Gentherm, we sat down with Madeline Lohse, studying Public Health at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and Malak Almonjed, studying Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Both students are Thermophysiology Research Interns working on our latest technologies, ClimateSense® and WellSense™.

Q: What attracted you to Gentherm’s internship program, and how has your experience been so far?

Madeline: I initially learned about Gentherm through a career fair at the University of Michigan. The recruiting team was very outgoing and friendly, which made a great first impression. I appreciated the fast-paced hiring process. Unlike other companies that may take a long time to respond or never get back to you, Gentherm was quick and efficient. Additionally, the idea of being part of a cohort of 20 interns was appealing. It’s great to have a community of peers around the office, especially when starting something new.

Malak: I started here as a co-op. I was searching for something in biomedical engineering and came across this opportunity online. The job description mentioned working with the human body, which aligned perfectly with my major. I began in November 2023 and enjoyed the experience enough to transition into the internship program.

Q: What are some key aspects of Gentherm’s internship program that stand out to you?

Madeline: One standout aspect is how Gentherm treats interns like actual employees rather than just temporary help. We have significant responsibilities and get involved in meaningful projects.

Q: What advice would you give to future interns interested in joining Gentherm?

Malak: Take the time to understand your role and the projects you’re working on. Ask questions, engage with your mentors, and be proactive in seeking opportunities to learn and grow. Also, take advantage of the unique opportunities that come your way, even if they’re outside your direct role.

Q: What makes Gentherm’s internship program unique compared to others?

Madeline: The sense of community and the supportive culture are unique. Having a cohort of interns creates a network of peers who are going through similar experiences. Additionally, Gentherm’s commitment to involving interns in projects and treating them as valuable team members sets it apart.

Q: How do you see the technologies you’re working on at Gentherm contributing to the future?

Malak: Working on projects like WellSense, which focuses on health and wellness features inside the vehicle, is innovative and forward-thinking. These technologies cater to various human needs, such as reducing stress and discomfort, which can significantly improve driving experience and overall well-being.

Q: How would you describe the overall culture at Gentherm?

Madeline: The culture at Gentherm is incredibly supportive and collaborative. Everyone I’ve met has been welcoming and helpful. It’s a motivating environment that encourages you to strive forward as a team.

Gentherm’s internship program is more than just a steppingstone for young professionals. It’s a comprehensive, immersive experience that equips interns with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to excel in their careers. With a focus on community, hands-on learning, and a supportive culture, Gentherm continues to invest in the future of its interns, paving the way for the next generation of innovators and leaders.
