In the fast-paced world of the automotive industry, career growth is often marked by determination, resilience, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. Ricardo Flores’ journey at Gentherm exemplifies this path to success. From humble beginnings as an intern to achieving a key leadership position, Ricardo’s story is one of continuous learning, strategic decision-making, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Q: Can you tell us about your background and role at Gentherm?

Ricardo: I was born and raised in Acuña, Mexico and hold a Bachelor of Science in Electromechanical Engineering and Master of Science in Business Administration and Leadership. I’ve been with Gentherm for 23 years, having started when I was just 19 years old, and I am currently the Director of Applications Engineering leading product development teams located in Northville, Michigan and Acuña, Mexico.

Q: What has your journey at Gentherm looked like over the years?

Ricardo: I began as a process engineering intern in 2001 when Gentherm was known as W.E.T. Automotive Systems. After being hired full-time, I transitioned from process engineering to product development, gaining experience in both manufacturing and design. Promoted to process engineer in 2005, I later moved to the design engineering team in Acuña, Mexico, and became a supervisor in 2011. In 2014, I relocated to Windsor, Ontario, as an engineering manager, and then to Northville, Michigan, in 2016. Now, as Director of Applications Engineering, North America, I lead product development teams in both locations.

Q: Balancing a demanding career in the automotive industry must be challenging. How do you manage to balance your professional and personal life?

Ricardo: Balancing work and personal life has always been challenging, especially early on when I was working full-time and attending engineering school at night. To unwind, I enjoy spending time with my family, whether it’s biking, playing in the backyard, going to the movies, or dining out. I also love barbecuing, even in Michigan’s unpredictable weather, and we plan weekend trips or vacations each year. Additionally, I try to make time for sports with friends whenever possible.

Q: What have been some of the biggest challenges in your career, and how did you overcome them?

Ricardo: Moving to different countries twice and adapting my personal life while learning and connecting with internal and external stakeholders in a new role was quite challenging. However, it also helped me develop and enhance my interpersonal skills and gave me the opportunity to work closely with a diverse team. Interacting directly with OEM customers was also a challenging but invaluable learning experience.

Q: What are some of the accomplishments you’re most proud of in your career?

Ricardo: I’m honored to have been part of the team that led and helped grow the applications engineering team in Acuña, Mexico. we grew from four to ten product engineers and established a CAD team. Design responsibilities were successfully transferred from Windsor, Canada, to Acuña, Mexico, which is something I’m particularly proud of. The success within the Acuña Design team provided visibility into my leadership capabilities, opening the door for taking the Engineering Manager role located in Windsor, Canada.

Q: How would you describe your leadership style?

Ricardo: I like to involve my team in any critical decision that will affect them. I believe in listening to their opinions and feedback and building a team environment where everyone feels heard and valued. Leading by example is also important to me. I want to ensure that my team feels supported and knows that their contributions are essential to our success.

Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to advance in their career?

Ricardo: My advice is to start with a clear plan. Write down your career goals and have a vision for the short, medium, and long term. Understand your strengths and weaknesses, identify gaps, and take actionable steps to reach your goals. Always perform your role as if the company’s success depends on it.
