Raised in a time and place with limited access, Gurvir’s upbringing instilled a deep appreciation for the transformative potential of technology.

Now, as a Senior Director of Software Engineering at Gentherm, she is passionate about empowering women and championing diversity. Join us as we explore her inspiring story and learn how she is breaking barriers and driving positive change in the field of technology.

Q: Can you tell us about your background and upbringing?

Gurvir: I was born and raised in a small village in India, where access to technology was limited. I vividly recall watching a TV repairman dismantle our television and was mesmerized by the intricate workings of the components. This early exposure instilled a desire to learn more about technology and how it functioned. When I moved to the United States, I carried that fascination with me and decided to pursue engineering to dig deeper into the world of technology.

Q: How did your upbringing shape your perspective on technology and education?

Gurvir: I learned to value the significance of technology and education in fostering progress and empowerment. I saw education and technology as catalysts for change and advancement, not just for individuals, but for entire communities. This perspective fueled my passion for pursuing a career in technology and making a positive impact in the field.

Q: What challenges did you face on your journey to becoming a software engineering leader?

Gurvir: My journey was not without its challenges. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, I faced stereotypes and biases along the way. Additionally, navigating a career in technology required continuous learning and adaptation to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving field. However, these challenges only strengthened my need to succeed and inspire other women to pursue their passions in technology.

Q: How did your background influence your leadership style and approach to empowering women in technology?

Gurvir: My background taught me the importance of resilience, determination, and seizing every opportunity. As a leader, I strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone, regardless of their background, feels empowered to contribute and succeed. I’m passionate about fostering diversity and championing women in technology, providing them with the support and resources they need to thrive.

Q: Can you share a specific experience or challenge you faced while studying or working in the field of technology, and how did you overcome it?

Gurvir: In many instances, particularly during my college years, I found myself as one of only three women in a class dominated by 70 male counterparts. However, rather than feeling discouraged by this imbalance, I viewed it as a driving force behind my determination. It fueled my motivation to prove that I am just as capable as anyone else in the field of technology. I firmly believe that I am entitled to the same resources and opportunities as my peers. So, when faced with the question of ”Why can’t I?,” my response is simple: “Why, not!”

Q: What advice would you give to women who share similar experiences and aspirations in pursuing careers in technology?

Gurvir: My advice would be to believe in yourself and never underestimate your potential.  Where you start does not define your capabilities or limit your aspirations. Embrace your unique journey and use it as a source of strength and resilience. Seek opportunities for learning and growth, and don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo. With determination and perseverance, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

Gurvir’s story stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and passion in overcoming obstacles.
